Recycling 101: Your Questions Answered

What is recycling?

Recycling is the collecting and processing of materials, that would otherwise be disgarded as trash, and turning them into something new! Recycling is the number one way we can positively impact our environment, community, and economy. Additionally, by taking the extra mile to recycle every piece of material possible, we are able to conserve energy and natural resources.

  • We can save the energy equivalent of using 322 gallons of gasoline by recycling one ton of office paper

  • Recycling one ton of aluminum cans conserves more than 21 barrels of oil consumed

  • The most recycled material in the United States is a plastic bottle: recycling 10 plastic bottles is the equivalent of powering a laptop for 25 hours or more

Why should I only put recyclable materials into my recycle bin?

Placing items that are not recyclable into the recycle bin can result in contamination of an entire stream of recyclables! In order to help our environment and assist in maintaining recycling facilities nationwide, it is imparative that we all take the extra step to ensure our recycling bins are filled with only recyclable material. Non-recyclable material can be detrimental to the machinery used at recycling centers.

What should I never put in my recycling bin?

Here is a helpful list to use as a quick reference when wondering what should be placed in your recycling bin:

  • Food scraps

  • Soiled paper

  • Broken glass

  • Syringes

  • Light bulbs

  • Aersol cans that are not empty

  • Propane tanks

  • Sewing needles

  • Gardening hoses

  • Miscelanious trash

What should I put in my recycling bin?

Here are some of the most common recycling materials you should be putting into your recycling bin:

  • Glass bottles

  • Paper

  • Food boxes

  • Cardboard

  • Soda cans

  • Jars (plastic or glass)

  • Plastic bottles

Are there any recyclable materials that I should not put in the recycling bin?

As odd as this question may sound, it is a great one to ask. There are some recyclable materials that should not go into your recycling bin.

  • Plastic bags

  • Electronics

  • Textiles (clothing items/woven fabric)
