What is Food Waste? Where Does it Come From?

Trimmings and prepared food from restaurants, unsold food from retail stores, and table scraps or leftovers from your very own home are considered food waste. Food waste describes food items that are sent for disposal or reuse. Often times, food waste can be sent off for composting, anaerobic digester, or to feed animals. These items typically makeup what is considered "food waste":

  • Plate-scrapings from served food

  • Food that is rotten or spoiled

  • Grease, fats, or oils used to cook food

  • By-products of beverage/food processing industries

Looking back at 2014, over 38 million tons of food waste was generated in the United States. Of this 38 million, only 5% was diverted from landfills and sent for composting. That means only 1.9 million tons were sent for composting while the remaining 36 million tons were landfilled or incinerated. These numbers are startling to say the least; by simply taking some additional steps in your everyday life, we can reduce the amount of food waste being sent to landfills and incinerators.

Take 2 Services offers a split bin option to all of our customers. This bin allows us to immediately separate food waste from solid waste so we can divert the food materials to local composting sites and food waste processing facilities. For large-scale projects, we are able to provide sizable bins that can also be allocated strictly for food waste generated by our customers. Keeping the food isolated will ensure that we are doing our part to implement a sustainable food waste management system to better our communities, environment, and economy as a whole.
