Construction & Demolition (C&D) materials are collected when a new building or structure is being build, an old or pre-existing structure is being renovated, or when buildings or structures are being demolished. C&D material can also be collected when there is roadwork being done (highways or surface streets). A majority of material collected in this line of work is heavy and bulky. These materials include:
Trees (limbs and stumps)
Dirt
Concrete
Drywall
Metal
Glass
Brick
Asphalt
Gypsum (component of drywall)
Doors
Windows
Plumbing fixtures
Wood
Did you know:
According to the Advancing Sustainable Materials Management Fact Sheet, in 2014, 534 million tons of Construction & Demolition material was generated in the United States. That's more than double the amount of solid waste collected that year!
So what can you do to help? You can help keep C&D disgards from landfills or incinerators by practicing source reduction! Additionally, do what you can do reuse existing materials on your job site. Salvaging and recycling pre-existing material can also benefit any job economically. However, if salvaging old material is not possible, do your best to buy used or recycled products, materials, and finishes.
